Tax Time is Coming Up

Filed under: Adam Snoozy — asnoozy @ 7:36 pm

As tax time approaches I have already been confronted several times with question after question about taxes. Being a traveler you will find that you will have a much more to do around tax time than the common citizen. With tax free incentives, per diem, travel allotments, most people will spend their time going over receipts and other information and the whole time they might not have the knowledge to avoid the “A” word. Most major tax companies will have a person that is an expert for your particular field; but if you go to someone like a small town accountant they might miss thousands in write-offs. Tax time can be a puzzling process, but if you have the knowledge you can make this process as routine as signing on with Halo Staffing.

Here is an article from Healthcare Traveler Magazine that might help.

  1. One thing I should mention while looking through the site- while there is no mileage test for housing allowances, a housing allowance must be accompanied by a housing expense- the actual test is the “sleep and rest” test or better, an overnight stay, not a commuting distance test. You can apply a commuting distance test for a mileage allowance, but not a meal or housing allowance. An employee that returns home at the end of the shift demonstrates by their actions (the lack of an overnight stay) that the distance is reasonable.

  2. You will have to file taxes in every state you work in as well as the home state if you are a traveler. This is from jsmith from traveltax.com

  3. My boyfriend spends too much time on websites like this. I hate all those sources! They must be abandoned!
